3 Questions to Help You Decide on the Perfect Bike Rack

BY Thomas S.

Riding your bike is the ultimate stress relief – no matter whether you’re spending a weekend on your favorite trails, enjoying the view while zipping around the boardwalk on your beach cruiser or commuting to work, there’s nowhere you can’t go on your two-wheeler.

Don’t let your inability to transport your bike prevent you from blowing-off some steam, install a bike rack to easily haul your bike wherever you want to go. But with so many to choose from, how do you know which one is right for you? Fortunately, we’re here to help – here are the three questions you need to ask yourself to decide on the perfect bike rack.

1. What kind of bike and vehicle do I have?

The first question is simple, but one of the most important. The perfect bike rack to meet your needs will depend on both the type of bike and vehicle you have. Do you drive a truck, SUV, van or sedan? Do you own a tandem, mountain, female or more standard bike? For tandems, only tandem-specific racks will do. Female bikes may need an adapter. Or, if you drive a truck you can take advantage of your truck bed with a truck bed bike rack or tailgate protector. The more specific you can be about your needs, the more likely you are to invest in the right rack.

2. How many bikes do I need to carry?

Another significant factor in choosing a bike rack is whether you bike by yourself or with others. Bike racks are available to accommodate from one to four bikes, and some can grow with extensions. Obviously, the more bikes the rack is equipped to carry, the heavier and larger the rack will be – so consider your most common scenario when choosing your quantity.

3. Roof, hitch, trunk or truck bed mount?

The last thing you need to consider is where you want your bike to be mounted on your vehicle. Hitch mounted racks are among the most popular, requiring no dismantling of your two-wheeler and featuring easy loading. If you’re concerned that a hitch or trunk mount will block your rear window visibility, then maybe a roof mount is more your style. When affordability is the biggest factor, consider a solid trunk mount. You can even go more in depth about the pros and cons of each of the different styles here.
