Become Prepared: Tips on Prepping a Car Survival Kit

Bookmark and Share

Whether you're on the west coast or east coast, winter means tougher weather than you're typically used to driving in. The rule of the road is to always be prepared, and in case of bad weather it's doubly important! In the event of seriously tough conditions-or worse, being stuck in tough weather conditions for extended periods of time-you can be as prepared as possible by assembling a survival kit for your car. Here are a few tips to help you put it together courtesy of Become.com:

  • Sealable can/tin (airtight if possible): This can be used to store your smaller food and kit items

  • Nonperishable foods (bonus points if it's high energy foods like bars or tinned fish) in case you're stranded for extended periods of time

  • Spare batteries and a flashlight: If you have to check a tire or check the perimeter of the car at night, a flashlight is handy-the brighter the better

  • Bright bandana: A brightly colored bandana (red or neon colors) to tie to the antenna of your car or windshield wiper helps signal to others on the road that you need help

  • A bag of sand: Salt can also be used (rock salt works well) to get you out of a muddy, snowy or otherwise slick situation by giving your tires some traction

  • Jumper cables: Always handy when you need to get your battery going again

  • Shovel: Whether for impromptu gardening or to help dig out your tire (to get something with traction in there), a small shovel comes in handy

  • Tow cables: If you need to get your car out of traffic and to the nearest point of safety, these are a good bet

  • An extra sweater and/or blankets: You can't rely on the heater if you're stuck, so preserving body heat is important

Be safe out there!
