Cold Air Intakes Create Improved Performance Gains

Air Intakes

An air intake is a device that increases horsepower and the overall efficiency of an internal combustion engine by drawing in cool air. Stock air intake systems are primarily focused on eliminating engine noise and therefore tend to be restrictive in regards to performance. That's where aftermarket air intakes come in. They're available in many different styles and sizes, and are relatively simple to install in comparison to other performance upgrades. Simply put: they're a cost-effective way to achieve optimum performance for those who demand the most their engine can produce.

All cold air intake systems provide an increase in the amount of oxygen used in the combustion process. The more air your engine receives, the stronger the combustion, and the higher the horsepower output. But, the difference you'll find between a stock air intake system and its aftermarket counterpart is huge. Imagine scuba diving but instead of a snorkel, you're forced to breath through a drinking straw. You might survive, but you'd emerge on the surface out of breath and gasping for air. Your engine works in much the same way. Most stock intakes are constructed with numerous twists, turns and chambers in an effort to muffle sound, but this chokes off the airflow. To put it bluntly, stock intakes are a boot on the neck of your motor.

Aftermarket systems, like a Camaro cold air intake or a Ford intake, completely replace your stock components, providing a smoother pathway for air to enter the engine and allowing for the greatest improvement to overall horsepower and torque of any performance upgrade. On average, an increase of 5hp - 11hp is standard. Other benefits include: increased torque, maximum fuel economy (adding between 1 - 2 miles per gallon), a throatier rumble to your engine at higher RPMs, and the muscled-up appearance of your engine bay.

Of all the performance-enhancing upgrades for your vehicle, installing something like a Dodge Charger intake or Tahoe cold air intake is one of the easiest. While the process differs considerably from vehicle to vehicle, most installations can be completed in about an hour (some go from start to finish in as little as 10 minutes!) and only requiring basic hand tools. In fact, many cold air systems, like Corvette air intakes or Spectra cold air intakes, can be installed using only a socket and screwdriver set. And, for those who aren't seasoned mechanics, most kits come complete with step-by-step instructions, providing the ideal performance upgrade for the do-it-yourselfer.

Just be sure to familiarize yourself with any local regulations or restrictions for aftermarket parts. For example, in California, all aftermarket parts have to be CARB certified. Without certification, you run the risk of a citation and failing your emissions test. Most air intakes are legal in all 50 states, but it never hurts to double check and be sure before installing it. And, it's a good idea to keep your stock air intake stshed away in the garage just in case.

Aftermarket air intake systems, like a Camaro air intakes, Ford air intakes and Corvette air intakes, are affordable and relatively simple to install in relation to other performance upgrades. They provide a cost-effective way to increase performance for the do-it-yourselfer who demands the most their engine can provide.
