When a busted part has left you sweating in the sun or shivering in your boots, tracking down a replacement can become an important mission. Check out the two most common air conditioner problems to see if this is what is causing your problems.
The Compressor Turns On, but No Cold Air Comes Out
If your AC compressor is turning on and off but you don’t have any cold air coming out of the vents there are several possible problems. The most common source of this problem is when you don’t have enough refrigerant in the AC evaporator to transfer heat.
This problem can arise because the refrigerant is either to low to maintain the proper level of liquid for your evaporator or the flow is restricted and unable to enter the evaporator. In order to determine which problem you have, you can add a small amount (2-4 oz) of refrigerant to the system. If doing so corrects the problem, then you probably have a leak. If this doesn’t solve the problem, then you may have a blockage in the system that needs to be located.
If your air compressor is engaging but not blowing any cold air, don’t continue to operate your unit until this is fixed. If your system in low on refrigerant your compressor isn’t being cooled properly. Also, without a good flow of refrigerant your compressor doesn’t get a good flow of lubricant. Both of these problems can cause the
AC compressor to fail and dramatically increase the cost of your repair. It is best to keep your system in the vent position until you are able to diagnose and fix the problem.
There is a Bad Smell Coming from my AC & Climate Control Unit
If an obnoxious smell is coming from your vents, no amount of covering it up is going to solve the problem. Instead you need to go to the source, your evaporator. The basic design of an air condition unit makes the evaporator a prime habitat for the bacteria, mold and mildew that is most likely causing the problem. Since it pulls in air from the outside it is exposed to all of the pollutants in the great outdoors. When these pollutants hit the dark and moist surface of the AC condenser, it becomes a prime breading ground for foul orders. The best way to solve bad odors in your Air Conditioning unit is to pick-up a good AC evaporator treatment that is sprayed directly on the evaporator to kill the bacteria.
