An air suspension system is a suspension system that uses air as a working “fluid” and shock absorber. Air suspension systems are just one of many suspension system types and are becoming more and more popular on today’s vehicles for their increased ride comfort over metal springs.

Air suspension systems use a system of air suspension bellows, air suspension solenoids, air suspension valves, and air suspension compressor or pumps to absorb bumps in the road. As your wheels travel over uneven pavement, the air suspension system uses air pressurized by the compressor to act as a spring. The compressed air enters the bellows through the valve at the prompting of the solenoid. When air needs to be let out, the solenoid triggers the valves to open and release air at the appropriate rate.

Though air suspension systems are increasingly popular in today’s vehicles, there are a few common problems that can keep you from riding on air. An air suspension system can be prone to electrical, air supply and air spring problems.

Electrical problems affect the air suspension level control unit, the air suspension solenoid, the compressor relay, air suspension compressor and vent solenoids. Usually, your vehicle’s warning light will turn on if any of these problems occur.

An air supply problem is usually caused by leaky or obstructed air lines, a faulty air suspension compressor or pump, or bad air suspension solenoids. Over time, the air bellows can spring leaks on the top or bottom due to old age or road damage. Leaks can also occur in the main reservoir tank, usually at the inlet and outlet points.

Air spring problems are often the result of leaks, damage, deflation or unfolding of the air suspension bellows. While problems with the bellows usually means a direct replacement, unfolded bellows can sometimes be re-folded without having to replace the unit.

No matter the issue with your air suspension system, it is always a good idea to take your vehicle to your local repair shop for an expert opinion.
