Whether you’re cruising in a luxurious M-Class or saving your cash and commuting in an ’85 Ford Escort, you’re sure to be interacting with your vehicles doors and windows on a daily basis. And, while all vehicles have these vital components, the guts of their windows and
can vary greatly. From motorized components that roll, lock and generally move themselves at the push of a button to your good ol’ fashioned manual types, let’s take a look at all the bits and pieces that make up a vehicle’s doors, as well as the various car
Door Handle Parts Explained
Door Handle - Car door handles may protrude from the vehicle's exterior surface or be streamlined into the vehicle's contour, it really depends on the make and model. You will want to make sure that you find the exact door handle that fits your model and year as many models change their door handles almost every year. It's an easy item for manufacturers to update to make the vehicle look new and revitalized. In some vehicles, especially with more expensive ones, the door handles might be decorated with chrome and feature a key-less entry pad utilizing either a numerical code or thumb scan. Wear and tear from opening and closing your car door may cause door handle breakdown.
Door Handle Assembly - The more your door handle is integrated with newer keyless technologies, the more risky it will be as the new assemblies are more complex
than manual door handle assemblies. Door Handle Assemblies many times include the handle so that you have the entire assembly ready for the replacement job that you have at hand.
The entire door handle assembly may need replacing if internal handle parts have been damaged.
Door Handle Gasket - Inside the Door handle assembly and also located inside the door when replacing door handle trim.
Door Handle Trim - To replace Door Handle Trim, you will need to do the following:
Tools that you need:
- Flat head screw driver
- Any type of hooking device, coat hanger, etc.
First things first, open the door of choice, and you will notice a little grommet.
Remove the grommet with the flat head screw driver to be able to access the slider.
Then, push the slider towards the front of the car to release the old door handle piece. To install the new door handle trim, place your hook in the proper position
to pull back on the slider and hold in the new piece up against the car. Pull towards your body to lock
the slider and hold the new trim piece in place. This replacement job still may vary based on your vehicle model.
Door Hinge - The
door hinge connects your car door to your vehicle. These can get worn out over time or by harsh opening and closing of car doors. Watch out for
the kids slamming those doors!
Door Lock Parts Explained
Door Lock - Since car door locks are used tens of thousands of times a year in your vehicle, you need a system that is reliable. Some of the ways that you can unlock car doors are with your key, by pressing the unlock button inside the car, by using the combination lock on the outside of the door, by pulling up the knob on the inside of the door or with the use of a keyless-entry remote control by signal from a control center.
Door Lock Actuator - The
door lock actuator is a pretty simple device. An electric motor turns a series of spur gears that serve as a gear reduction for the function in your door. The last gear drives a rack-and-pinion gearset that is connected to the door lock actuator rod. The rack then converts
the rotational motion of the motor into the linear motion needed to move the lock.
