Horns
The purpose of a car horn or truck horn is to alert other motorists and pedestrians. All vehicles (including motorcycles) must have a working horn. If your vehicle's horn is
not working or not working properly, you must replace it. The horn can be replaced or it can be upgraded to a louder horn with a horn kit.
Smaller vehicles usually have higher frequency
car horns while larger vehicles have lower frequency horns. This enables the size of the vehicle to be identified quickly by the sound alone. Luxury cars often
have a smooth sounding horn while economy cars may have a less refined tone. Many states require vehicle manufacturers to have loud and low tone horns in large trucks. Many vehicles built before the '70s had two horns.
One would be a low tone while the other would be high. This two-horn setup gave the vehicles a distinctive tone that is unique to the era.
How a Horn Works
Some horns on modern vehicles are computerized audio systems but the electromagnetic car horns remain common. The electromagnetic horns use a magnet that attracts a steel diaphragm.
The magnet is turned on and off in order to make the diaphragm vibrate. The current generated by pressing the horn button inside the vehicle is more than almost every other electrical
device in the car. The
engine starter is the only electric device that uses more current.
Horn Kits
Compressor horns are another option for individuals who require a very loud horn.
Car horn kits can be purchased that include an air compressor, the horns, a
relay, and mounting brackets. Installation
instructions are also included. These compressor horn kits are available up to 135 decibels. If that's still not loud enough, train horns do exist for vehicles. These train horn kits boast a decibel
level up to 152. Horn kits this large come with an air compressor tank, air pressure gauge, pressure switch, and a heavy-duty hose. You are sure to be heard with a horn kit this large and powerful.
