Carburetors Defined:
The carburetor was invented in 1885 by Karl Benz, yes
that Benz. As a device to blend the air and fuel in an internal combustion engine, the initial design proved to be much more successful than any prior attempts at fuel delivery. As a result of this success and continued refinements, the carburetor soon became the industry standard for fuel delivery. In fact, the carburetor was used for to deliver fuel in almost all automobiles until the mid-1980s. Though most modern vehicles now use fuel injection instead, there are still many carbureted vehicles cruising our highways, byways and racetracks.
How Your Carburetor Works:
The carburetor basically works by moving air faster or slower. When you push on the throttle, the carburetor mechanisms opens to let air flow into the engine. When you let off the throttle, the mechanism closes to slow the air flow. As this air moves faster or slower, the suction created pulls the appropriate amount of fuel into the airstream. Since the throttle adjusts the amount of air flow, it in turn determines the amount of fuel being drawn into the engine, allowing your vehicle to move faster or slower.

carburetors are inherently complex mechanisms. While your engine is running, the carburetor is required to measure the airflow of the engine and deliver the required fuel while keeping the critical fuel/air mixture in the proper range. This doesn’t seem too hard at first glance, but when one considers factors like outside temperatures, atmospheric pressures, engine speeds, vehicle loads, and other external forces.
