Parts of a Clutch System
Clutches work to apply engine power at different levels for proper gear shifting. They are usually made up of a spinning flywheel, a clutch pressure plate, a clutch disc, and a release system. The flywheel is what mates the engine to the
transmission parts. The clutch pressure plate clamps on to the flywheel and controls how much pressure or tension is placed upon the unit. Its parts include a diaphragm spring, release levers and a metal plate, usually made of iron. The clutch disc spins with the flywheel and has friction surfaces made of copper and asbestos.
Clutch Operation
During normal operation, when the driver depresses the clutch pedal, a cable is engaged which pushes the release fork which then presses the throw out bearing. This pressure causes the clutch to release as the plate is pulled from the clutch disc until the plate is fully disengaged. When the clutch is in the up position, the pressure plate pushes the clutch disc against the
flywheels surface. The plates, being pushed together, allow the turning motion to be transferred to the gearbox.
Hydraulic Clutch
A hydraulic clutch makes use of
brake fluid to create the pressure that is necessary to control the clutch plate unit. The fluid is stored in a hydraulic fluid reservoir which must be kept free of air bubbles and a process called “bleeding” is used to ensure the proper functioning of the clutch. Hydraulic fluid levels should also be checked regularly.
Care of the Clutch
A clutch system must be properly maintained to prevent damage to the vehicle. Often, the
friction material on the clutch disc wears out and must be replaced in the clutch begins to
slip. The throw out bearing can also wear out over time, leading to difficulties in the clutch engaging properly. Other components to watch include the clutch lever, pilot bearing, flex plate, release bearing, clutch shaft, clutch hose and flywheel bolt.
