CV Joints
A
CV joint, or constant-velocity joint, allows a shaft that is rotating to transmit power through a variable angle.
CV joints also allow for constant rotational speed while the angle is changing without an increase in play or friction. Depending on the type of
drivetrain parts involved, they can be used in both front wheel drive and all wheel drive vehicles, although rear wheel drive vehicles with independent rear suspension can also use them. The CV boot is a necessary component of the CV joint to ensure that the joint remains clean and in proper working order.
CV Boots
CV joints are extremely durable. The only maintenance usually required for CV joint is an inspection of the
CV boot, or rubber gaiter that surrounds it. The CV boot must be fitting properly and not be cut or split. If the CV boot is damaged, moisture and debris will eventually ruin the CV joint. The grease used to pack the joint can also escape from the
CV boots and compromise other components on the vehicle.
Diagnosing a CV Joint Problem
In general, CV joints are reliable and will not give you problems. The two most common problems with are partial seizure of the joint and also excessive wear.
Excessive wear can be detected by a vibration coming from the CV joint at specific speeds. Take the vehicle to a large open parking lot and drive the vehicle in tight circles. Alternate turning in left and right circles. If the joints are worn they will make a rhythmic cracking or clicking noise. A popping or clunking sound indicates wear in the inner joints when applying the gas.
A strange vibration that runs through the suspension may indicate that the CV joint has been partially seized. This is caused when the CV joint overheats, which may further indicate that the CV boot has been cracked and the grease is no longer properly lubricating the joint. If this problem is discovered soon enough, the CV joint can be cleaned and repacked with grease and then covered with help from a CV boot kit.
