Have you ever been driving in your car, mindlessly making that last left-hand turn before pulling into your driveway, and wondered what exactly is going on with your wheels? How do wheels work? What are their different parts? How can you tell if there’s a problem? Well, inquiring minds get ready to be satisfied. What follows is a brief overview of wheels in all their wonder.
Basically, your wheels move and turn thanks to your drivetrain. The drivetrain is made up of all moving components that work to drive the vehicle. The primary drivetrain parts include the engine, clutch, transmission, driveshaft, differential, axles and wheels. Driveshafts transmit engine torque to the differential. The differential then distributes torque to the driving axle shafts, allowing the driving wheels to turn at different rates. From there, the axle shafts distribute torque to the U joint or CV joint, which passes the motion to the wheel hub assembly. The wheel hub assembly facilitates wheel spin and connects your wheels to your vehicle. Tires are mounted to the wheel hub, which is covered by the hub cap for added looks and safety. And there you have it—working wheels.
Your wheel hub assembly is made up of a few basic parts: the wheel hub, studs and hub flange, which work as one unit to connect the tire to the vehicle, the wheel bearings, and the lug nuts, which screw onto the studs to hold your tire in place.
Detecting wheel problems pretty much boils down to hearing weird noises or feeling strange vibrations. U joints, wheel hubs and wheel bearings can all make noise when they need repair or replacing.

If you hear a metallic clunking when you place your vehicle in gear, there may be an issue with your U joint. Other indicators of a bad U-joint can be vibrations from the driveshaft, especially between 25 and 35 MPH, shudder or squeaking during acceleration, or rust.

A wheel hub that needs replacing or repairing will often cause strange noises or vibration. Wheel hubs are also susceptible to corrosion and can throw your tires out of alignment if improperly installed.

A strong indicator of bad wheel bearings is unusual noise. Since wheel bearings handle a lot of stress, it is recommended that they be checked and serviced every 30,000 miles to avoid major issues.

If you discover you need new U joints, wheel hubs or wheel bearings, remember the AutoAnything name. We have the OE, OE-grade and generic parts you need for the lowest price around.
