Gauges & Dash Components - Speedometers, Odometers and Tachometers

Bookmark and Share

The most basic dash setups usually include a tachometer, fuel gauge, odometer and a speedometer. This is often referred to as the gauge cluster. Modern electronic speedometers work with the aid of a sensor which conveys the rotational speed of the driveshaft in the form of electronic pulses. These are converted to signals which are displayed via an analog or digital readout. A tachometer is used to count the revolutions made by the motor as measured by the rotational speed. A fuel gauge is made up of a "sending unit" which sends its status message to the indicator unit. An odometer is used to measure the number of miles traveled. Most cars are also equipped with a trip odometer which can be manually reset and is often used to measure fuel efficiency. Other basic automotive gauges include clocks, readouts for oil level, temperature and other engine indicators.

The Gauges themselves act as the front-end, conveying data from the engine and other areas of the vehicle via other mechanical and electronic components. For example, speedometer cables attach the transmission to the rear of the speedometer unit. A modern tachometer uses a small laser, mirror and chip which counts the number of times the light beam is blocked by the rotating shaft. Mechanical odometers use a network of interconnecting gears which are connected to the transmission shaft via a cable. A host of other parts are used for proper functioning of gauge components. These include voltage stabilizers, temperature compensators, circuit boards, conductor plates, control units and bulbs.
There are quite a variety of gauge components currently available which allow a driver to fully customize the look and style his dash. These include overlays which are placed upon gauge faces to change their color. There are also kits available which are made of more expensive stainless steel. A number of tinkerers prefer retro looking gauges to complement a more vintage vehicle, while others gravitate toward neon colors and superfluous lights.
