An ignition switch connects the starter to the battery so that your vehicle will start when you turn the key. It also distributes electrical current to control the power to many car accessories, which prevents the car battery from being run down while you’re listening to tunes in your parked car.

The ignition lock is where you actually put in your key. You can find your ignition lock assembly and ignition lock cover mounted directly onto your steering column. If you can’t find it, then you might want to reconsider driving altogether.

Ignition locks are often to in whole as an Ignition Lock or in part as an ignition lock cylinder, ignition lock housing or, on select vehicles, an ignition lock escutcheon.

In most vehicles, you can either turn your key to start the engine or turn it to various positions to only engage certain electrical components. Some different positions are:

Off Position: Circuits are open and no power is supplied, but the steering wheel can be turned.

Lock Position: Circuits are open, no power is supplied and the steering wheel is in the lock position.

Accessory Position: Power runs to all circuits, except the ignition and starter circuit. This position lets you turn on your radio, fiddle with your power windows, open your sunroof and more while the engine isn’t running.

Start Position: Power runs to the ignition and the starter motor only. That’s why you’ll notice that the radio stops playing when you crank the key to start your vehicle. The start position temporarily engages to activate the starter.

Run Position: All circuits are closed, except for the starter circuit, and current can pass through.
