Ignition wires are an integral part of your car or truck’s ignition system. They work by moving a pulse of electricity to the spark plug from an ignition distributor. The fuel and air which is held in the combustion chamber is ignited which in turn causes the engine to start properly.
Ignition wires can carry up to 50,000, volts and have to be built to withstand this great amount of power flow. They must be able to transfer this to the spark plug and endure the high amount of heat involved. The wires are separated by plastic ignition wire holders which prevent them from touching one another and crossfire. They are routed to the spark plugs in a so called “firing order” which corresponds to the number of cylinders in the engine. For example, a v8 engine will have 8 cylinders which must fire in a certain order.

Spark plug wires aren’t built to last forever. Over time they are unable to transfer the needed pulses, a symptom which is often caused by damage to the wire’s outer jacket insulation which makes up the bulk of the wire (and are a safeguard against the high temperatures of the engine compartment). Ignition wires are often replaced after 50,000 or so miles, although every make and model has a different recommended replacement time. If your engine is having trouble starting or a sparks are visible, it might well be time to think of getting an ignition wire set. Other useful components include:
