When your engine parts involve air pressure, liquid levels or gas levels, a sensor or sender is usually involved. Sensors and senders allow the engine part to gauge certain operating conditions and relay important information to your vehicle’s computer. Without sensors and senders, your engine may be operating under poor conditions—something that can cost you dearly in repair costs in the future.

Some common automotive sensors and senders you can find in most vehicles deal with speed, RPM, temperature, brakes and turbochargers and include speedometer sensors, water temperature senders, brake fluid level sensors and turbo boost senders, to name a few.

A speedometer sensors monitors your driving speed and relays that information to your speedometer gauge located on your dashboard. A bad speedometer sensor will result in improper speed displays—a dangerous prospect to say the least.

An RPM sensor monitors your vehicle’s RPM (or revolutions per minute) and gauges how many rotations your crankshaft turns every minute. This information is displayed on your vehicle’s tachometer. If you are driving a manual vehicle, the RPM sensor and tachometer can help you shift correctly. In an automatic vehicle, the actual tachometer is somewhat less important to the driver, as the vehicle shifts on its own, but the RPM sensor is always important to proper shifting and engine operation.

A water temperature sender and ambient temperature sensor measure different temperatures in your vehicle. The water temperature sender monitors water temperature in your vehicle’s cooling system. It helps the system determine if the liquid streaming through your engine is too hot, too cold, or just right and acts accordingly. An ambient temperature sensor detects the temperature outside of your vehicle. The sensor will display this information on your dash, if your vehicle is equipped with this function.

An oil pressure sender and oil temperature sender reads and relays the pressure and temperature of your vehicle’s oil. Often, drivers need to replace their oil pressure sender seal to ensure a proper read and efficient vehicle operation.

A vehicle’s oil pressure sender monitors the brake fluid level, which is important in ensuring safe braking. If your brake fluid level sensor has gone bad, it’s important to get it fixed fast. The same thing goes for the all-important
brake pedal position sensor, which monitors your brake pedal position to facilitate proper braking.
