If you are looking to improve the appearance of your vehicle, hubcaps are a great place to start. Hubcaps are decorative disks that cover a car wheel or rim. Hubcaps are generally used on stamped steel wheels. Alloy wheels or premium steel wheels with designs may have a smaller center cap which covers the lug nuts and wheel studs. Replacing a missing hubcap or center cap will recapture that finished look.
If you are shopping for hubcaps there is good chance you have lost your originals while driving. You may want to replace your original hubcaps or you may want to upgrade to a different style. Hubcaps do have a tendency to fall off. They may be jolted loose after hitting a bump and then fly off when the vehicle travels at a high speed. Most hub caps use a clip-on or bolt-on retention system. The clip-on hubcap has a plastic or steel clip that attaches to a groove on the wheel. Bolt-on hubcaps may have a threaded fastener or a plastic washer attached to the lug nut. Clip-on hubcaps have a tendency to fly off suddenly while the bolt-on hubcaps tend to come loose over time.
To prevent loosing your hubcaps you should periodically check them to make sure they are tight. You can also attach the hubcap to the wheel using a zip tie. Make sure to have a utility knife or pliers in your vehicle in order to remove the hubcap in case you get a flat and need to change a tire.
A lug nuts is type of nut that secures a wheel onto a vehicle. Most vehicles have four or five lug nuts per wheel. Large vehicles such as trucks and buses may have up to ten lug nuts per wheel. If any of the lug nuts on your vehicle are missing or not fitting the wheel studs properly they need to be replaced immediately. Wheel studs should also be replaced if they have been stripped or bent. These wheel & tire parts parts need to be performing properly to ensure your vehicle is safe. Also make sure to check out wheel bearings and wheel seals.
