Fun Fact:

Harley Earl; Father of Automotive Chrome
Harley Earl (1893-1969) masterminded the automobile industry's most important innovations. Born in Hollywood, CA; the artist and automotive genius crafted his first custom coaches for Tinseltown's elite. His futuristic designs quickly caught the interest of General Motors executives back in Detroit. GM recruited Mr. Earl in 1927 and for the next 32 years Harley ruled Detroit with a flair for design and a chrome-plated fist.
Known as Mr. Earl to GM employees and "the da Vinci of Detroit" to admirers, Harley quickly climbed the GM ladder and became the most influential auto designer of all time. Best known for fathering the Corvette and the tailfin craze, Earl is also credited with the first-ever onboard computer, two-tone paint, wrap-around windshields, hard-top convertibles, the first concept car, and of course, chrome trim.
Mr. Earl's ideas for chrome went beyond mere trim. An early observer to Earl's chrome craze proclaimed that chrome was god and Harley Earl was the prophet. A glaring account of Earl's fondness for flash comes from an early Oldsmobile designer. The design team presented Earl with 2 chrome-trim designs for the latest Olds. By mistake, both sets of chrome were added to the design. Mr. Earl fell in love with the chrome overload, the car went into production and the rest is chrome history.
