Gentex K5 Auto-Dimming Rear View Mirror w/Compass Reviews

Good replacement/upgrade.

My Audi A6 was equipped with an auto-dimming mirror, but no compass. By the time the second OEM mirror failed, I was ready for a different mirror. The Gentex K5 mirror functions as well or better than my original mirror and offers a compass, which I find very helpful when driving in a large urban area. My only suggestion is that the installation instructions offer more guidance on how to adapt existing mirror wiring to connect with the new mirror. I took my old mirror apart and found that two of the four wires were labeled "ignition" and "ground." I then cut the wires on the old wiring connector and spliced these two into the new connector. It worked perfectly. This suggestion might be helpful to other purchasers and it certainly is better than the trial and error method.

Gentex installation

The wiring diagram appeared to be done by a high school student. It was incomplete, misleading and confusing. Without the internet to help there is no possible way to figure out what the wires should be connected to. There is no explaination for what the miniture switch is for, that has two wire coming out of it. It's anybody's guess whether it should be switched or not. Does everybody know what a reverse trigger is. It doesn't say to hook it to plus or minus 12V or even what it should be hooked to. In summary the installation instructions are horrible. Routing the wires was a nightmare without the cars service manual. The internet is your only hope of ever doing the installation yourself.
