Description

Want to boost your ride's horsepower but don't want to crawl under the hood to do it? Hypertech's Power Programmer III makes it easy: Just plug this self-contained automotive tuning computer into the under-dash diagnostic plug, answer a series of yes/no questions, and the Hypertech Power Programmer III goes to work.

The Hypertech Power Programmer III instantly recognizes your vehicle's power train by reading your VIN for specific information on the engine, transmission and drivetrain. For some vehicles (see Detailed Info), you can even tell the Hypertech Power Programmer III to tune your vehicle for optimal performance with 87-octane or premium 93-octane gasoline. Plus, it'll adjust for aftermarket components such as non-stock tire sizes and rear-end gear ratios, too.

For many vehicles, the Power Programmer III unlocks 3 stages of performance tuning. Stage 1 gives you a modest boost and may improve fuel mileage. Or, dial up to stage 3 for heavy-duty towing and intense thrust. Lifetime Warrnaty.

Notes

  • Please note that the 8th digit of the VIN Code designates which engine the vehicle is equipped with. Please verify your vehicle's engine code for proper Hypertech unit.
  • Flex Fuel Vehicles: fueling with E85 is not recommended in conjunction with your Hypertech unit. Burning E85 reduces efficiency and power compared to using gas, which nullifies the effect of Hypertech's programming.

Hypertech III review

Posted on 09/23/2006 by Tom C. (Tempe,AZ)

"I am very satisfied with this Hypertech Power Programmer. I received the product in 3 business days. The Programer was very simple to install on my 2005 Ford F-150. It only took about 30 minutes. Anybody can do it if they can follow directions simple directions. I installed the 87 octane mode, adjusted tire size, (It only goes to 34" and mine were 35"), increased the rev limit by 500 rpm, increased the shift points for 1-2 gear and 2-3 gear by 300rpm and firmed up the shifting. All of this made a noticable difference when I pulled a loaded trailer thru some steep canyons and mountain roads. It has significantly more power for pulling hills and passing. The gas milage increased by 2 mpg but I am not sure if that is only from recalibrating the speedo or from running more efficiently. I would recommend this product to anyone."

waste of money

Posted on 09/18/2006 by Ryan S. (Lodi,CA)

"I had used the Hypertech programer on my 97 GMC 1500 and had high hopes for my 06 GMC 1500 4x4. What a let down! I felt no change except for the shift firmness, which is so harsh in any firmness level to cause a loud clang in the drivetrain when shifting. I wish I could send it back. What a waste of money!"

not so happy

Posted on 09/17/2006 by Keith W. - 1997 Ford F250 (San Antonio,TX)

"If extra power was all I was after, I could give it 4 stars. However, my mileage dropped 2.3 mpg with level 3, and the power gain, is so-so. Not quite what I had heard from others."

Gave 98 Durango 5.2L a nice boost!

Posted on 09/15/2006 by Todd B. (Bethel,CT)

"I set the programmer for the 87 octane rating...so I'm basing this review on that. I initially had a problem getting the unit to complete the progamming due to a voltage leak somewhere in the truck. I talked with a Hypertech "tech" and he said to keep trying. Things like aftermarket stereos, XM radios, an open door, etc will give the unit an error code. After about 4-5 attempts the unit successfully programmed the truck. Right off I noticed a boost in throttle response and more power in the higher rpms. Here's the thing though, I haven't seen an increase in mpg yet...but...I pulled a 30 foot travel trailer over 1000 miles and the mpg didn't decrease! I expected my gas mileage to drop significantly from pulling a 5400# trailer but it stayed the same! Once gas prices come down a little more I'll try programming it for a higher octane rating. I'm sure I'll have even better results. It's definately paid for itself just in the fact that I was able to tow with no decrease in gas mileage!"

Good investment

Posted on 09/07/2006 by Dennis S. (Escondido,CA)

"Installed in my Chev 2500 Duramax truck. Very simple to install in just minutes.I have never got over 17 MPG before I installed it. After installation I am getting 24 MPG average daily driving.I just towed my 37 foot 5th wheel across the desert and up some fairly steep grades. Never got hot and maintained a very easy 65 MPH. The Gas went from a 7 MPG to a 12 MPG averageing 65 MPH. If gas milage is not your problem power it up to 75 or 80 MPH and the MPG will fall fast. I am not ready to give it a 5 star rating because I am not sure about the shifting. It seems to slip or jerk at the present with the 5th wheel. I will wait and see the final out come."

Cool Tool

Posted on 09/07/2006 by Kenneth C. - 2002 Chevy Silverado (Iron Mountain,MI)

"Does everything they say it will and easy to use. Plug & Play. The only skill you need really is the ability to read and follow directions. My '20 Chev 2500HD 6.0L didn't really need a boost in power but I sure got one. I did stiffen up the shifts to 50% and so far I love the results. I believe I have a better MPG number but it's too soon to tell for sure. I was getting 15 on the highway with a K&N Filter and X-Force dual cat back exhaust. It looks like I picked up another 2 MPG on the highway. I like the easy of use and the ability to change settings as well as take it back to factory specs if I want to. Neat product, good price and service from autoanything.com"

MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT

Posted on 09/07/2006 by Bob G. (Phoenix,AZ)

"I thought I researched tihs product thoroughly, wrong. The only change I experienced was a $285. deduction in my checking account, zero performance gain. I have a 6 Cyl. Jeep Wrangler and one of the categories was for "speed rated performance tires". What a joke! How about "oversized tires". These guys are auto engineers? This rates up there with my worst purchases of all time and I'm 55 years old!"

A MUST HAVE FOR YOUR DURAMAX

Posted on 08/24/2006 by Leo P. (San Diego,CA)

"In short... You are going to be amazed by what it does for your Duramax. The mileage was significantly improved and the power is instantly noticeable. Everything about it was worth any penny. I run oversized (305) tires and I was able to get an honest 24mpg at 67mph, and if you can stand going this slow: I got 34mpg at 55mph. yes, 34mpg!!! The motor has so much increased horsepower that it takes so little rpm’s to move it at 55mph. Buy it, you will love it! Also, Autoanything had it to me the NEXT day and was the lowest price on the WWW. Thanks Autoanything AND Hypertech! –ldp, San Diego, CA"

John

Posted on 08/22/2006 by John V. (Banks,OR)

"Nice power and increase of about 2.5 mpg in my 2002 7.3 liter powerstroke. My only critique is that the shift into third gear gives a bit of a lag. The first two shifts are very firm with no power loss. Overall well worth the money and I should have done it 70,000 miles ago."
