I've long been skeptical of the tunes you might get from the simple programmers but relented to try it out on my GMC 6.0 gas it worked flawlessly, easy to use, simple and straight forward. I had the info in and its never run as smooth and started as fast, a 1 second crank and its running no hesitation, most of all the tires now match the speedo. I'm a believer. Bob J.

I was looking for more bottom end to help while towing. The Auto Anything sales rep said this was the one I needed but it's set up for more top end programming and may behold for that but does next to nothing for added torque. Therefore, the cost was a waste of money in my case.

I choose Hypertech because I also own one for my 2001 diesel truck and it works very well, this one for my jeep was a little harder to install, the program (required me to use my computer) but was no problem. There is a definite HP increase, I also put a new header and exhaust on which I recommend before increasing HP in any motor.

Super easy to install! I increased tire size from 275.55.20 to 285.65.20 and my mileage actually went up once I set up the programming to allow for the new tires. Mileage isn't dramatic, and acceleration is not snap your head back, but it definitely increased responsiveness and passing speed. There are more sophisticated programmers out there but they are twice as much. This little programer will have you smiling every time you drive it and for a VERY reasonable price, couldn't be happier.

I was really surprised at how easy this tuner was to use and the how noticeable the results were. I paired this tuner with an MBRP exhaust system and it's like I have a brand new truck. Couldn't be happier.

I have a brand new FORD F150 FX4 with ECOBOOST engine. Ive heard good thing but is this tuner strictly power or will it help mpg. Lastly most importantly will it reset my factory setting so that I can take it in for repairs when needed?
Answered by Nathan S. — Apr 18, 2013 4:18 PM
Hi, Programmers add MPGs if you accelerate slowly and keep your foot out of the gas. It takes a combination of air and fuel to make power. Increased power = more fuel used. All changes are fully reversible.

Finally bought my dream truck, however the power and tourque while towing 10,000 lbs up hill discourages me. I typically tow my horses in a steel six horse slant trailer and about 10,000 lbs of hay on a gooseneck dual tandem trailer in the flat lands. While towing a 9700 lb camper in the foothills of Georgia I was disappointed going uphill. Does anybody have recommendations on what setting to use for more power and tourque while going uphill. Answered by Nathan S. — Jan 17, 2013 8:02 AM
Hi Travis, If you are going for power, run the highest octane setting (with the correct fuel in your tank of course). If you want economy, just choose the economy setting. All other settings on the programmer are meant to tailor the performance of your Edge the way your like it. There is no Optimum setting.

What’s the difference between a programmer and a chip?
Answered by Elizabeth C. — Jun 29, 2012 8:16 AM
Performance programmers are handheld or dash-mounted units that connects to your OBDII port in your cab. Most give you a range of tuning, diagnostics and monitoring capabilities. They’re also more interactive and user friendly, and much easier to uninstall. Chips must be installed into your vehicle’s PCM, where they stay. They usually don't offer a choice between tunes, or any diagnostics or monitoring abilities.

Answered by Elizabeth C. — Jun 28, 2012 10:52 AM
Stock tunes are designed for everyday day driving, by everyday drivers under most driving situations. It’s kind of a compromise between ultimate performance and ultimate economy. The aftermarket tunes are just the opposite. You can tune for maximum economy, maximum performance, optimized towing, etc. And, you can always set it back to stock for your daily commute if you like

Answered by Nathan S. — Jun 28, 2012 3:57 PM 2011 Chevy Silverado
Heat buildup is the main cause of transmission destruction. If you are running 35" tires without changing rear end gears, towing heavy loads or are using your stock transmission cooler, your transmission fluid will quickly overheat causing damage to the disks and seals in the transmission. If your truck has a Powerstroke diesel, I would highly recommend upgrading your factory transmission cooler as diesel programmers can radically boost horsepower and torque on higher settings, wearing drivetrain components quickly if you do not have the proper upgrades to deal with the additional heat generated. Overheated transmission fluid will have a burnt smell and will be dark brown or black in color.

I have a 2005 Chevy Express 4.3L V6 and I was wondering if anyone has experience using the Hypertech Max Energy Programmer with that van? I am mainly interested in gas mileage and but more for engine power. I live in Las Vegas and I have a steep grade to deal with coming from Los Angeles. I basically have the gas pedal on the floor for about 30 miles going uphill in 105 degree weather. This is when the vehicle is loaded but it does not overheat (yet) and runs well. I am worried about using a programmer to adjust settings and the effects it could have on engine, transmission and vehicle life. Does it shorten/extend it?
Answered by Nathan S. — Jun 28, 2012 4:01 PM 2011 Chevy Silverado
Your van will most likely have the same drivetrain life as the power gains will be noticeable but will not be enought to damage driveline components.

Answered by Michael K. — May 14, 2012 4:47 PM
Hey Bill, thanks to the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act: US Code – Title 15, Chapter 50, Sections 2301-2312, your vehicle’s factory warranty is protected by law when you add aftermarket parts. Check it out the link above in the notes section for more details.
As far as the tell-tale sign or "footprint" left behind, there are varying stories on this. It's probably safe to assume that though the factory tune can be reinstalled and the manufactor cannot tell, if they really dig into it for somereason, there will likely be some sort of sign.

So, I am seeking a programmer and I almost purchased the ECON version, however, because of the sale price, I am purchasing the Max Energy Programmer. I'll see how it does. I calculate if it can cause a 2 mpg increase, then it will purchace itself within 1 oil change period. Gas is about $4.40 a gallon here now. Is there anyone with proven mpg increases with a V-6?

A 1-2 mpg is fairly common depending on your driving style while in economy mode. Also, recalibrating your speedometer with you Max Energy will give you an accurate speed reading, allowing you to adjust your driving style for better mpg.

The Hypertech Max Energy Programmers are tuned to an engine in stock configuration. You may see a loss in performance with use of the programmer.

how will this impact the "active fuel managament/ variable valve timing". can i easily return to "stock" settings with this unit for vehicle warranty purposes? thanks
Answered by Nathan S. — Apr 24, 2012 3:58 PM 2003 Ford F-150
The Hypertech Max Energy Programmer is calibrated specifically for each application so you can expect a gain in performance and economy while retaining good driveability. A common benefit of using this programmer on newer GM vehicles is increased throttle response by reducing the factory programmed delay built into the drive by wire system. And best of all, when it comes time to take your truck in for service, simply use the programmer to set it back to factory settings and leave the unit at home. You can change settings as much as you wish.

does the programmer let you control traction control. yes there is a button on dash to control but thats only cuts off the tires from spining. can you keep it from turning off throthle when you stomp on it???
Answered by Nathan S. — Apr 20, 2012 4:13 PM 1998 Honda Accord
Your truck happens to have what is called a "drive by wire system". When you press on the gas pedal, the engine control module decides how much air is allowed into the engine through the throttle body. In the past, a cable attached to the gas pedal would mechanically do this. The control module also receives signals from your antilock brake system, transmission and other sensors. What all of this means is that when your wheels spin under acceleration, the engine control module will reduce engine power until the wheels gain traction. So turning the traction control off with the button will prevent the power loss during wheelspin, but the control module will still operate the throttle body. A Hypertech programmer is great because it eliminates the excessive input delay programmed by the factory, giving you much better throttle response. This is a very common complaint with drive by wire systems.

It depends on several aspects of your current vehicle status. Since you have a 97 CK 1500, it could really help. Have you done any other modifications to improve your MPG's?

how much of a horse power gain can you expect with it set to the highest level
Answered by Whitney B. — Nov 04, 2010 8:32 AM
Cody, In order to determine the projected horsepower, I'd need to know your submodel. If you select your vehicle (including sub model) in the vehicle drop down on the Hypertech Max Energy Programmer page you'll see all the possible hp gains. +6 hp for 4.3L V6 +9 hp for 4.8L V8 +18 hp for 5.3L V8 +35 hp fo 6.0L V8 +113 hp for 6.6L Duramax +33 hp for 8.1L V8 Hope this helps
