Trips with the pooch may not be as intense as the Battle of Las Guasimas, but those pot holes and quick turns truly make your four-legged friend an honorary “ruff rider.” Secure your favorite canine for rough roads with the Ruff Rider Roadie Dog Harness—the only car harness for dogs that exceeds the S.A.E. standards for human seatbelts.
The heavy-duty webbed dog safety harness quickly attaches to any vehicle’s seat belt system and keeps your pet safely in the center rear passenger seat. This dog seat belt is secure, yet allows your pet to move around comfortably thanks to the two handy travel positions. The adjustable tether let’s you choose from a sit/stand/lie down or a sit/lie down position. Even more convenient, the tether doubles as a short walking lead—ideal for those short trips in between travels. And, when not in use, the tether rolls up and secures with a hook and loop closure.
Thanks to the wide range of sizes, this harness fits dogs from 6 to 150 lbs. Plus, the harness is easy to get on and off—just slip it over your pet’s head or have them step through. Unlike most other harnesses, the Ruff Rider Roadie doesn’t use a choking collar or any plastic pieces. And, your Ruff Rider Roadie Dog Harness is backed by a 90-day warranty.

The Ruff Rider Roadie Dog Harness is a wonderful idea. And for those for whom getting the right fit is not a problem, it is the best harness for a dog's safety and comfort. However, I have had the most difficult time finding a harness that fits my dog, even though I was careful to take the correct measurements and order what I thought was the right size. I have taken a break from the entire ordering process and plan on one more try to order a harness that fits correctly sometime soon.

We bought the Roadie because it appears to be the only harness that has been crash tested and passed the tests. We've only used it once so far, as other reviewers mentioned it is a little awkward to put on but the dog seems comfortable in it once it's on and is able to sit or lie down comfortably while still being restrained and therefore not interfering with the driver.

The ruff rider seems like a nice sturdy harness. I like that fact that my dog can either sit up or lie down while wearing the harness and fastened in. However, I was disappointed with the sizing. I was extra careful with the measurements, and even called and talked with customer service before ordering. The harness seems a little snug around her chest cavity, right behind her front legs, and this cannot be adjusted. It seems I am not the only consumer to have trouble with the fit.

When my Belgium Shepherd rode in the car with me and I would brake suddenly, she would fall off the seat. I worried that she would one day get hurt. I bought her a harness from another company and by the time we reached our destination, it would be bunched up or off of her completely. I returned it and purchased a Ruff Rider for both of my dogs, the Belgium Shepherd and Chihuahua. We took them for a ride and they were comfortable and safe. The harness stayed put. We don't leave home without their Ruff Rider Roadies.

This is our third Ruff Rider -- our puppy keeps growing! But she loves how comfortable it is and how securely it holds her in place if Mom or Dad has to brake suddenly or unexpectedly. We are now in a Size 3 and hoping this will be the last we have to buy, but if Nutmeg keeps growing, we will get the next one just to keep her safe. The Size 3 has an extra adjustment that we find very convenient to use and it really allows for a more snug fit. Our only improvement would be the sizing chart listed online; it's very confusing and we had to return one of the harnesses because the sizing listed was outdated and did not reflect proper measurements. I suggest calling the 800 number rather than ordering online to be sure you are getting the right size once you have measured your dog. We would recommend this to any and all of our dog owner friends. You simply cannot protect your pet enough with all of the crazy drivers out there!
