"I bought this rack for use on a camping trip! Installation was easy, and everything fit together the way it should. It hauled my gear with no problems, and made more room inside of my jeep liberty for dry items. Do not hesitate to purchase, it is a nice rack!"

"The rack arrived in great shape and was OK to assemble and install 9although the directions could have been clearer).  It looks great, works well but causes excessive noise at speeds above 65 MPH.  If I were to buy again, i would look for one with a spoiler because of the noise."

"Ive been looking for a few months for a nice roof rack under $300. I googled one day and found this site selling a Sucro RoofRack, a name brand product, for a very reasonable price. I payed and 5 days later it was shipped to my door in Louisiana all the way from Los Angeles. It was a pain to install even with a few friends. The brackets that mount to the factory luggage rack dont match up quite so you 3 out of 4 of the bolts are cross threaded but it holds up solid. Ive had a full size mud tire up on top bolted down and the racks holding it just fine. One last thing the directions are hard to understand and it took me awhile to full comprehend them."

Surco Safari / Channel / Spare Tire

"The value of the Surco Safari rack is hard to beat. I needed a basket that was wider than the typical 39 - 40 inches of most kits to clear Ham/CB antenna mounts. The kit has reasonably good instructions and extra hardware making the build quick and easy. Installation was more challenging - the channel system had screws that required shims to reach the square nuts - and finding a happy center took more effort than it should. The biggest negative was the spare tire carrier threaded rod; the paint should be removed before attempting to add a tire and wingnut. Otherwise the assembly will lock up due to caked finish paint. For a serious-looking reasonably durable rack that is half of the cost of many other systems, this one should not be overlooked."

"I'd checked out a number of racks before settling on this one. In appearance it's great but... - assembling involves slotting 4 'L' shaped pieces together and then securing them with small machine screws into predrilled holes. One of those holes hadn't been predrilled and those machine screws are kind of small; - only has 3 bottom 'slats' as a floor leaving very large gaps, most camping gear will fall through; - it sits very high BUT MOST WORRYINGLY: - the rack mount bars are completely straight but the 4runners roof tracks are slightly canted - as you tighten it up it's trying to pull the roof tracks off the roof"

"I was happy to at least see for once something that says made in the USA. Hopefully that applies to all the parts. It was really easy to put together and secure to the top of the 4runner. Size is perfect. What is disappointing is that when we went to adjust the rack location, one of the bolts stripped and we had to use a bolt from the inner rack to replace the stripped one from the outside railing. Didn't do anything different to rebolt it, it just stripped going in. Weird. Would have been nice to have a few extra of these just in case. Hope that isn't a forshadowing of the quality of the others. Took a bunch of boat stuff and camping stuff packed in it 600 miles round trip and all was well. Want the cargo net too now. At this point we are happy with it, just leaves me a bit nervous about over time the security of the bolts. How about a few extra for just in case?"

"The rack system is a good value. Durability does not appear outstanding but should be sufficient for my purposes of moderate off-road use. Installation of the track rail system onto the fiberglass room was much easier than I anticipated but fixing the feet into the rails proved fairly difficult. I wish it were easier to remove and replace the rack onto the track rails. If you intend to mount the rack and leave it in place all the time, this is a non-issue. Overall, I do recommend this rack as a lower cost/lower quality alternative to the Garvin Wilderness Rack product."

"Can't beat the price and ease of installation. If your installing one of these units on a Hummer H3 I highly recommend cutting out 1 3/4 inches of the support bars to rack assembly. The height is way to high and doesn't look right, but this may be something Surco addresses in the future. By modifying the height of the rack holder, it does not interfere at all with sun roof operation. I will be putting these racks on all my budget off-road builds I do for a living."

"Very easy to install! I was very happy mounting this rack on my 07 Jk 4 door wrangler. I would not recomend this rack for heavy duty , but great for lighter applications. I mounted this rack to put the 80lb. spare tire on the roof and so far it has done very well. I highly recomend making aluminum plates to support the inside of the fiberglass. The kit comes with no backer plates, so buyer should re enforce with anything on the inside to spread the weight of the rails above. Other than that, this rack does a great job for alot of less money, and very easy to install. Aluminum wont rust over time, like steel racks will, so another plus for this one!"

Best deal for my 2007 Explorer!

"Light weight, strong, and good looking. Holds a lot without getting in the way. It also makes it easy to find my Explorer in parking lot full of SUV's. The stock mounting brackets are not the ones in the picture and they did not work for me. I had a friend machine some custom ones to do the trick. Aside from that, this rack is the best deal in it's class and it arrived the day after I ordered it! Thanks AutoAnything!"

Good look, but not so good built

Posted on 12/31/2007 by Troy L. - 2007 Hummer H3 (Missouri City,TX)

1 of 4 people found the following review helpful.

"The roof rack may look good by itself and is priced reasonably, but it looks much smaller after getting installed on my Hummer H3. The whole thing is just like a big brother wearing a little brother's hat! Surco should use bigger aluminuim material to contruct the roof rack frame. Also, the size of the screw connected the cross bars onto the roof track is too short, and for some reasin only this particular part of screw is in metric system! It took me few trips back & forth hardware stores to finally get it installed."

"The safari rack that i ordered was for a Land Rover LR3. The customer serice rep told me that it would fit my model & year, and it did, BUT it was difficult and time consuming to install, also the connector pieces could have been made longer. Once installed this rack is not easily removeable, so going through a car wash is a problem. I have a black vehicle that shows everything. The rack is sturdy, but there is give to it, and I thouhgt that it could have been made more solid. I think it's a value purchase for the price & added space that it provides. Shipment was very quick."

Surco safari rack, a mixed rating

Posted on 11/13/2007 by Julian M. - 2007 Honda Element (Fredericksburg,VA)

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.

"Bought the 50x60 Surco rack. I wanted to point out a few things for those of you that are considering purchasing one. - The screws that mount the car adapters to the rain gutter are TOO SHORT! If you forego the washers, the screw head is smaller than the holes, so that won't work either! Temporary solution is to screw on the car adapters so that the screw grabs at least one edge of the hole... in the meantime, the manufacturer is sending me longer screws. - The four bolts that mount the rack to the crossmembers are TOO LONG! When properly tightened, the foot of the bolt will start penetrating into the crossmember itself, causing a dimple. Solution is to use a washer to effectively shorten the bolt. FWIW, washers are probably a good idea here but they were not provided. Instructions were missing or not included for the adapters, though the rack assembly itself is pretty straightforward. I'll probably just go to the hardware store and buy allen bolts for the adapters. As much as I am biased towards products made in the USA, I've had tenfold better luck with PRC and imported goods. Other than that, this rack is solid and looks OEM. Recommended with the caveats discussed here."

Surco Safari Rack - Montero

Posted on 10/15/2007 by Vince R. - 1995 Mitsubishi Montero (Fallbrook,CA)

"For the money, this rack kicks butt! I was able to store an extreme amount of camping gear on the top of my Montero for an off-roading trip to Big Bear. Even with the twisty roads, the rock gardens, and the heavy gear...the rack held up and I didn't lose a thing. I would recommend spending the extra money and purchasing the extra floor slates. I would also buy a good cargo net to secure and hold items in their place. This rack is a great buy!"
