Surco safari rack, a mixed rating

"Bought the 50x60 Surco rack. I wanted to point out a few things for those of you that are considering purchasing one. - The screws that mount the car adapters to the rain gutter are TOO SHORT! If you forego the washers, the screw head is smaller than the holes, so that won't work either! Temporary solution is to screw on the car adapters so that the screw grabs at least one edge of the hole... in the meantime, the manufacturer is sending me longer screws. - The four bolts that mount the rack to the crossmembers are TOO LONG! When properly tightened, the foot of the bolt will start penetrating into the crossmember itself, causing a dimple. Solution is to use a washer to effectively shorten the bolt. FWIW, washers are probably a good idea here but they were not provided. Instructions were missing or not included for the adapters, though the rack assembly itself is pretty straightforward. I'll probably just go to the hardware store and buy allen bolts for the adapters. As much as I am biased towards products made in the USA, I've had tenfold better luck with PRC and imported goods. Other than that, this rack is solid and looks OEM. Recommended with the caveats discussed here."

"The Surco Safari Rack is a high quality rack. The system is put together very well and has a good tough powder coating. The only downfall in my case was I have a four door Wrangler with no roof rack. The supplied brackets were a little too tall for my liking so I had to improvise. Bob"

"For the money, this rack kicks butt! I was able to store an extreme amount of camping gear on the top of my Montero for an off-roading trip to Big Bear. Even with the twisty roads, the rock gardens, and the heavy gear...the rack held up and I didn't lose a thing. I would recommend spending the extra money and purchasing the extra floor slates. I would also buy a good cargo net to secure and hold items in their place. This rack is a great buy!"

"This is a very durable roof rack, you can pretty much stand up there and the cross beams won't bend. Comes disassembled, however once put together, this thing becomes a tank. It mounted excellent on my 2000 Jeep XJ with the supplied mounting hardware. 2 thumbs up!"

A good product but needs some redesigning

"The assembly took about 40 minutes. The directions could have been better but you can figure it out. Mounting was difficult due to the fact there are two seperate lower tabs for each track mount. If they had designed it as one lower tab that both fasteners went thru it would have made mounting it a one man job vs spinning/alligning two tabs into the track."

"This roof rack is generally good, but needs another cross bar in my opinion to fill the open space and ensure that bags don't slide down through the rack. Otherwise, this is a nice rack (so to speak) and installation was pretty easy. On a negative note, I had to buy longer bolts for my Hummer H3 installation."

"It is a great rack. Strong, lightweight. We installed the mounting brackets on the existing roof rails. The safari roof rack horizontal rails could be a bit longer to receive the end caps more easily. We had to remove some of the plastic on the inside of the cap to get it to go around the bracket hardware."

"When the components are viewed separately, they may look a little flimsy. However, once they are all put together, they make a heck of a rack, especially for the price! I tossed a 32" tire up there and the floor doesn't even bend."

Honda Pilot - Easy

"I ordered the rack for a 06 Honda Pilot. I got it in 2 days. It went together easily and i had it on the car installed in about an hour. You could proably do it with one person, but i used two just to lift it up and onto the existing rack bars. Obviously, the first time putting one together takes longer. If i had to do another one, i think i could have it together an up in 20 minutes. Reading some other reviews, i was worried about the instructions not being clean, but they were fine. Just used it for a week camping trip and it worked great, even in high winds."

"Rack came in a timely manner but instructions were a little to be desired... Not very clear. Rack was cheaply made and would not buy the product again... I'm actually going to have one built... what a waste of money!! Too Much Money For What You Get! AutoAnything was not to blame and I would buy from them again."

Easy Set Up!!! Jeep Liberty 2004

"Rack was delivered quickly and mount adapters came the day after. Straight forward installation. Took less than 45 minutes to have fully installed. Just used it for a long weekend of camping and rafting. Held 3 coolers, tent and chairs. Amazing strength - friend (165 lbs) was on top of coolers moving things around. Had a $20 cargo net from Walmart that held everything down."

"Unless you're putting big, blocky, self contained gear up there, you're going to have to add some kind of bottom grate to keep stuff from shifting down and out. Also, significat wind resistance reduces highway mpg more than, I suspect, the Yakima racks do."

"The new rack with tire carrier looks great on my lifted cherokee. Not to hard to install but it definitely helps to have two people. I also suggest getting the tire carrier for anyone who wants to improve carrying space in the back of their jeep."

"Hardware was missing from the roof rack box upon shipping. AutoAnything quickly contacted Surco and had the hardware shipped out. Directions could have been clearer but I got it together and on the Exporer in an hour. The Suco rack adapters recommended in the shopping cart fit perfectly."
