Thule Hull-A-Port Kayak Carrier Customer Reviews
45 Customer Reviews
The Thule Hull-A-Port Kayak Rack offers a new slant on the kayak rack. The unique J-style carrier gets your ocean or whitewater boat on its side, freeing up room on the roof for a second kayak, a bike or any gear you can rack.
With the Thule Hull-A-Port kayak rack, loading couldn't be easier. Just dump it on the padded cradle and cinch it down tightly and securely with the two provided ratcheting tie-down straps. For better fuel economy and more overhead clearance, choose the PRO Hull-A-Port. It's design allows it to fold down when not in use. Both Hull-A-Port models are built in the USA and boast all-metal attachment hardware and UV-resistant covering on the pads for long life. Your Thule Hull-A-Port Kayak Carrier is covered by a Lifetime Warranty.

Great appearance with special padding to protect the kayak surface. Easy to mount and remove. Kayaks postured securely in the cradles. Caution to recheck the clamps after driving the first hour. Then you should be good to go the remainder of the trip.

This is well thought out from every angle. Attaches to my square load bars in 5 minutes. My kayak is up and loaded in 10. The straps are impressive (two hull, one bow tie-down, one stern tie-down) and I like that they're included. I sprung for the Pro (folding) version, and I'm glad I did: I'm not sure I could get the hull straps in the cradle w/o folding them down to eye-level first. Recommended for reliable car-topping.

Just got the Hull a port PRO - very impressed on how easy it was to install and use. Have only used twice - but very happy with the solid performance. The fact that it folds down allows me to keep on vehicle (Honda Ridgeline) while in my garage.

This base rack and J rack were easy to instill. Sturdy and fits my car that has a sun roof. I am enjoying using it to go to different bodies of water. I would highly recommend it. The customer service folks were respectful and very professional. I have recommended others to call.

I purchased 2 of the Thule Hull-A-Port and used them for the first time on a 600 mile road trip, no problems. They were easy to install, mine were on a little angle because the crossbars on the factory roof rack on my Ford Escape are on a slight angle. I used all the extra tie downs for this first trip and the kayaks did not move, even with highway speeds of 75 mph. The kayaks were secure enough with just the two straps that I did not use the extra straps for short 6 mile trips to Gulf launch. They performed very well and did what they were designed to do, I'm very satisfied with this purchase. AutoAnything.com had the best price that I could find and they shipped them earlier than promised. Nice job! Thank You!

I have used several kayak carriers, but this one is te best. It keeps a nice low profile when not in use and came with everything i needed to secure my kayak down. The only issue I had was it required an adapter kit to secure it to my Thule 422XT rack which I was unaware until I received the product and tried to put it on my truck. Check the fit guide before completing your order, you may need the adapter kit as I did. To make it simple, if you rack is a 1" round bar or a 1" by 1" square bar it will fit without the kit. If its a large oval sape, it will require the adapter kit.

2007 Toyota RAV4
1 Answer
We are looking for a reliable way to pack our 2 sea kayaks back and forth to the water. We have a 2007 Toyota RAV4. And yes, it has factory installed roof racks. By that I mean bars on each side of the car, and the 2 bars going across. I'm trying to decide what to order, and like the looks of the Hull-a-port pro. Questions: Will it fit on the RAV4, and will be attach directly on to the factory cross bars. Thanks, Rocky and Patty

Hi, I don't think there would be any issue attaching a Hull-a-port pro to your RAV4's roof rack.

Do you need a bow and stern tie down on a Chrystler Town & Country 2013 van? If so, how are they attached?
Answered by Nathan S. — Apr 25, 2013 7:35 AM
Hi, That depends on the length of your boat and if there's a spot to hook your tie-downs to on the chassis.

It's not clear to me . . . Are TWO of the J units included in the purchase price? (that is, everything needed for one kayak?) Are bow and stern tie downs included, in addition to the straps that secure the hull to each J unit?
Answered by Nathan S. — Mar 22, 2013 8:54 AM
Hi, Two J-carriers and straps which attach to the carriers are included.

Hi. Would these kayak cradles you’re selling be compatible w/ my OEM Volvo 115357 - Roof Rack Bar Kit C30?

Hello. I have researched your question and the Thule Hull-a-Port kayak rack will easily fit on factory installed racks. There are no tools needed for installation, and it is a versatile rack that accommodates both sea and whitewater kayaks. Thank you for your question.

Does this Hull a Port need the racks that go across? Or can it go on another way?
Answered by Elizabeth C. — Jul 13, 2012 5:32 PM
Hello. Yes, the Hull-A-Port requires a roof rack. If your vehicle does not have a factory rack, you need to start with a base rack system. Look into the racks by Yakima, INNO, Thule or Rhino-Rack, depending on which brand fits your vehicle.

I'm looking for a daul kayak mounting system. We are new to kayaking so this would our first rack. Our yaks are between 10'& 12' long and we'll be using the factory installed roof rack which came with the car, it has two rails and two cross braces. Whats your thoughts on a good rack for our needs. Thanks. Dave

We bought the dual carrier which if you are not very tall is a challenge to load the kayaks, but we will keep it for my husbands Jeep. We just bought a Outback but this time we are going to buy 2 single carriers we think it will be much easier loading 1 from each side of the car. Good luck with your choice and have fun and stay safe kayaking

Which Thule kayak rack should I buy to transport two kayaks?

I would say to buy 2 separate carriers easier to load 1 from each side of the car
