Thule Sidekick Box on Pontiac Vibe

Posted on 08/10/2006 by Kevin E. (Cleveland,OH)

"Great little box in my opinion. Easy to put together (putting the top and bottom together is easier with two people). Seems durable enough. Took it on a 1200 mile trip without any problems. I was able to fit a full set of golf clubs and cart bag, plus two medium duffel bags inside. NOTE: This will fit on a Pontiac Vibe without drilling extra holes if you unscrew the antenna. I did this and still was able to have good radio reception. Good box and a great retailer."

A Small Wonder!

Posted on 07/18/2006 by Teddy R. - 2001 Honda CRV (Gold River,CA)

"Thumbs up to AytoAnything for shipping it out a day after my order ... for FREE! Though received the box (the cardboard box of course) beat up, and taped all over at one end. Looks like Fedex didn't take good care of it (must be the size of it). Luckily, I only notice a small dent at the top (the cover) of the cargo box. Surprisingly, it can be massaged and came back to it's original form. I read everyone are suggesting that you might need some help in assembling it. I took the challenge and was able to assemble it by myself ... easily. Just follow the instructions, and when it's time to attach the cover, flip the cover up side down and attach the bottom part (with the hinges already attached). The cargo box is lightweight, and easy to carry without help. Having said that, the material used is not something heavy duty. How durable it is remains to be seen. Looks like it can take normal bumps. The design can take a load limit of 75 lbs. Which is the load limit of the OEM roof rack of my 2001 Honda CRV. Attaching the cargo box to the roof rack is easy too, and fits well to my CRV's roof rack. I bought this as an extra storage for my camping gears. As I can't fit everything inside my tiny 2001 CRV. The cargo box served it's purpose. It looks tiny, but it's 8 cu.ft. of storage is suffice. It was able to fit our tent (4-person), 3 bulky earth pads, 3 foldable chairs, tarp, and more. I think it can fit another backpack, but I didn't push it. You'll reach the 75 lb. limit before you even reach the volume limit. It indeed feels flimsy, but I think its capable and won't break that easy. I would say it's aero-dynamic ... as i can't feel any drag. As if I don't have anything attached to the roof rack, can't hear a thing. I say it's a keeper. I just removed it this afternoon as I went to have my car washed. Hopefully it will last long. Either way, I'd still say its money well spent. A low-cost solution for space problems. It's made in USA, and it has a Thule Lifetime warrant"

Thule Sidekick review

Posted on 07/03/2006 by Willits S. - 2006 Scion xB (Tacoma,WA)

"The box seems strong enough, though of course it's far too early to determine whether it will stand up under repeated use. I encountered one problem and will be waiting/watching to determine whether it was a one-time accident or a chronic problem. The socket of the rear hinge separated from the ball and I was unable to reinsert it manually while on the road. It didn't affect my use of the top carrier, but if there had been some circumstance requiring me to have good access with head clearance inside the carrier, it would have been an inconvenience. And of course, should the front hinge also separate, that would be a REAL aggravation to a solo traveler who doesn't have a companion to hold the lid up while someone else rummages around inside the carrier. One of the caps popped off a hinge attachment screw while I was trying to fix the hinge, but I found it and it popped right back on and seems to be secure. Overall, the carrier seems to be performing adequately, and if the hinge doesn't prove to be a chronic problem, it may perform excellently. Bill"

"Easy to install. Assembled by myself although it would be easier with help (the instructions say to use help while attaching lid). Wish it was a bit bigger but was large enough to do the job. Sturdy on the road with no noticable drag on our Tahoe."

Small, Light, but it Delivers

Posted on 06/14/2006 by Marion G. - 2001 BMW 5-Series (Bakersfield,CA)

"I read several reviews of the Sidekick before I bought it. I found the comments to ring true during a recent 6 day whirlwind trip with mine. It is small (a little smaller than I expected) and feels a little flimsy during assembly, but I must say it performed well - didn't leak during very heavy rain, didn't move at speed (even with a cross wind) and didn't appear to have a negative effect on mileage. One comment by others that I must emphasize - It definately takes two people to assemble and install. Its not difficult, just cumbersome. Once its on, its good to go and go and go. If you don't need a lot of extra space the sidekick should serve you well. I'm glad I bought mine."

Good value for money

"Fits perfect to my Ford Escape cros bars. It's been smaller then I'd expected bu still can fit two big (one 18gal, another 13gal) bacpacks and one medium (7gal) and there is still some space for some crap. The plastic is very thin but still alright. I haven't noticed any noises from wind while driving. Easy and fast to fix and remove to and from the roof. Takes some tiny stuggle to assemble, good to have one helper."

Great for the price!

Posted on 03/14/2006 by Robert Q. (Olympia,WA)

"Worked just fine on my Astrovan. Did it all myself, but helps with 2 people putting it together and on. Sturdy enough for the bulky junk when going camping, etc. Mounted it off to the right, and don't even know its up there while driving. Great for the money (and Autoanything was $30 cheaper than all the rest). Some say flimsy, but I would call it flexible instead. It will hold up probably longer than my van....long as I don't knock it off! The only thing I will add is a drilled hole through the upper/lower lip on the middle side for a Padlock. Seems the lock keys are pretty generic (as in one fits all). And thats only for the overnight in some motel. Overall pleased, knew what to expect BEFORE ordering, and I give it a thumbs up. Mostly for the great price."

sidekick works well

Posted on 02/15/2006 by David B. (Granite Bay,CA)

"The sidekick appears a bit flimsy just out of the box but once assembled and bolted to the rack becomes real sturdy. The size is perfect for out Lexus RX 330 since we didn't want something overly large. The hardware is of good quality and should last for a long time. It fits 4 duffle bags of gear inside and can be installed in under 5 minutes. The best part is Auto Anything had it on our doorstep 2 days after the order was placed. I have bought a few things from them with awesome results"

Good looking extra space

Carg Box for VW Touareg

Posted on 10/22/2005 by Anthony H. - 2005 Volkswagen Touareg (Wilmington,NC)

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.

"Before ordering, I spoke to a customer service person who assured me that the Thule Sidekick would fit onto the roof rack of a VW Touareg. This was not quite true. I had to replace the plastic threaded nuts with washers and wing nuts because the 4 hooks that attach the box to the roof rack are too short for this vehicles rack. Once the attachemnt problem was solved, everything worked fine and we took a fully loaded cargo box on a 1200 mile trip with no problem."

Well made, and inexpensive

Posted on 10/11/2005 by Matthew S. - 2003 Pontiac Vibe (Beaver Falls,PA)

"Assembly is a breeze and took about 20 minutes. Installation on my wife's Pontiac Vibe was easy, other than having to drill extra holes for the front u-bolts to match up with the roof rails. I don't blame the cargo box - the roof rails just don't spread out enough due to the roof antenna. No problems or noise while driving over 70 mph. This cargo box is much better than the cargo bag (almost as expensive) I used before."
