An OK solution / alternative to a roof storage box

Reviewed By Michael C (Vancouver, WA) Reviewed for a 2009 Volkswagen Touareg —12/15/2012 9:30 PM

Ordered this because my wife is short and wouldn't be able to reach a storage box on the top of our Touareg and we saw an RV with one of these boxes this fall and thought this would be a great alternative. The metal frame is very sturdy, however, the plastic container feels flimsy / weak. We have yet to really test this with significant weight, but running nearly empty it seems to ride quiet. The container is lockable, but does not come with a hitch lock (the Thule hitch lock is $40+... ouch)

Easy to install

Reviewed By George G (Huntington, NY) Reviewed for a 2008 Volkswagen Touareg —12/28/2010 5:38 AM

The system attached to my cars existing roof rails very quickly and easily. Simple directions made the installation a breeze. Good finish and it looks great on the Toureg. The Thule cargo box I have has a very old fashioned attachment mechanism which required two people and many adjustments but that is another issue.

Surco Safari / Channel / Spare Tire

Reviewed By Karl B (Las Vegas, NV) Reviewed for a 2006 Volkswagen Touareg —7/9/2008 2:56 AM

The value of the Surco Safari rack is hard to beat. I needed a basket that was wider than the typical 39 - 40 inches of most kits to clear Ham/CB antenna mounts. The kit has reasonably good instructions and extra hardware making the build quick and easy. Installation was more challenging - the channel system had screws that required shims to reach the square nuts - and finding a happy center took more effort than it should. The biggest negative was the spare tire carrier threaded rod; the paint should be removed before attempting to add a tire and wingnut. Otherwise the assembly will lock up due to caked finish paint. For a serious-looking reasonably durable rack that is half of the cost of many other systems, this one should not be overlooked.
