Rhino-Rack 2500 Series Base Rack System Reviews

I really like the look of this rack, and the instructions seem great except for one major flaw: They specify exactly how tightly to tighten the tensioning bolts (88-97 pound force inches), but the tool they provide isn't a torque wrench. It says in bold all-cap letters not to over tighten, but without a torque wrench it's impossible to know. I took a best guess and the rack seemed extremely solid. And a few days later I noticed on of the clamps had come completely off and if I had driven anywhere the rack would have fallen off the car. Was it so tight that it forced it's way off or so loose that it worked it's way off? I have no idea. So I had to go to the hardware store and buy a torque wrench. But the tool they provide is a security allen wrench that can't fit onto the torque wrench. So I had a choice: Take a hacksaw to the tool they provide and adapt it to the torque wrench, or go buy a set of security bits. I chose the latter, and now the rack is securely and nicely on my car again. So, in addition to the price of the rack I had to buy a $35 torque wrench and a $15 set of security bits. It was an unexpected cost. If you already have a torque wrench, there's nothing to not love about this rack. If you don't, just be aware that it will be an important tool purchase.

I installed the rack on my 2011 Subaru Outback. I put it on myself and including the time it took me to take everything out of the packages I put the rack on my car and it took a whole 15 minutes. It's perfect for all my boy's equipment. No problems whatsoever. It is easy to adjust so it should fit most cars and SUV's.

I prefer these over Thule and Yakama because these use the Honda fit AND allow easy removal. They are also more quiet than at least the standard Thule and the foot has a cleaner fit. My only complaint is that the special allen wrench with a hollow center snapped while installing the main bolts to the roof (not the smaller bolt to attach the rack to the foot). I advise you save the special wrench for the on/off bolt and use another conventional wrench for attaching the foot to the car.
