This cover is designed to be mounted flush with the top of the bed and, when closed, sits on a short lip just above the top of the bed. It should be pointed out that the cover was designed for installation without the plastic bed liner. One would have a fair bit of cutting away of the bed liner for proper fitting. The transverse cover stiffeners are integral with the cover, so stowing doesn't involve removal of separate pieces. The cover snaps into a notched piece on the rear of the bed mounting rails, and tension may be adjusted via screw wheels at the front of the cover (underneath). The cover locks into place and is released via spring-loaded release cord at the tailgate. The sides of the cover are locked down with velcro. When properly installed and adjusted, the cover looks like a fiberglass unit (i.e., smooth, without raised stiffeners). Having just installed the cover, I am not able to comment on its longevity. However, it appears to be well-made.
