I ordered the Curt hitch for my Toyota Matrix so that I can carry my a bike rack. The hitch installation was fairly simple with just 4 bolts to screw in. It also looks great. However, after installation I heard a rattling noise underneath my car. I saw that the part of the hitch that lies towards the front of my car stuck out just enough to have my muffler hit it when the muffler vibrated. I guess I'm going to have to get this part grinded down so that I don't have to hear the rattling.

The hitch was a little more complicated to install than expected. Some of the parts had to be altered to fit. Should have come factory specific since I did put in my make/model when I ordered the hitch. Had to use a metal grinder to make the plate fit my Ford Explorer. After the parts were altered the installation was as expected. Note you also will need a torque wrench to complete the installation properly.

Four bolts to put on in a fairly accecessable area. No cutting body panels like in other installations I have read about. I can take it off in 15 minutes and nobody would know it was ever on there. Looks as good as a receiver can look on a Golf. I have noticed a slight improvement in body structure rigidity, like hitch is acting like a anti-sway bar connecting the very ends of the frame together. I bought a cargo tray to connect to it, but it ways 50 lbs. wish it was lighter.

I don't know how much I saved by installing this unit myself, but it must have been a bunch compared to similar quality at a 'hitch' shop. Pretty good instructions for those who are mechanically inclined. Suggested 45 minutes install time. This must be for those who have experience installing a number of these - perhaps on the same vehicle. Install took me 2 hours. Most time consuming was detaching the muffler from hangers and grinding hole in frame to accomodate fastening hardware.

what is the different between the 2 and 1.25 inch hitch? Which one is better? Which one is more functional? Why is the 2" cheaper than 1.25"? Thanks

    Answers (1)

    Staff Answer

    Answered by Nathan S. — Jan 28, 2013 10:28 AM

Hi, Hitches are divided by weight ratings. Class I & II 1.25" receiver hitches are usually the only option for cars, crossovers and small SUVs. Class III &IV hitches use 2" receivers and are often found on large SUVs and trucks. The Class III & IV with their 2" receivers tend to be cheaper because they require far less engineering and design to fit unlike the cramped confines found in chassis of smaller vehicles.

    2012 Mazda MX5 Bike Carrier

I would like a bike rack/carrier for a 2012 Mazda MX5. The 2012 Mazda MX5 (Canada) owners manual states that a trailer hitch should not be installed on this car. Do you have a hitch or a carrier that I can use that will not void the warranty? Why do they say no hitch should be installed? Thanks Bill of Brockville

Hey Bill, I'm not sure why they recommend not adding a hitch, but to keep your warranty intact, perhaps check out one of these Trunk Mount Bike Racks.

I have not heard any complaints about this in the past. I would recommend the Curt receiver Hitch. We have different size ballmounts and extensions if you need to lift the attachment up or down to get your trailer where it needs to be.

Hi Lawrence, the installation for your Accord does require the enlargment of some pre-existing holes as well as some trimming to the heat shield. As far as installation costs, that varies from shop to shop, so just check with your local mechanic.

    Answers (1)

    Answered by Mike R. — Mar 08, 2012 6:33 AM 2012 Toyota Yaris

I bought a Yakima Big Horn rack from Auto Anything, which is capable of carrying 4 bikes. I typically carry only 1 bike. But the Yakima rack is very secure, which is great. I use it on a Class 1 receiver (1-1/4") and I couldn't feel more secure about my bikes. My carrier is mounted on a 2012 Toyota Yaris, which is smaller than your Maxima. (A friend down the street advised AGAINST buying a 2-bike carrier if there's even a slight chance you may want to carry more than 2 bikes sometime in the future. I'm glad I took his advice, because with the Yakima Big Horn, I didn't pay a premium for a 4-bike capacity.) If you plan to carry only bikes with your car, a class 1 receiver hitch is certainly stout enough for 4+ bikes!!!

Hey Art, I tracked down the answer, but you may not want to hear it: Yes, you'll have to drill holes into your bimmer. Most vehicles already have factory-drilled holes, but your ultimate Bavarian machine is not one of them. If you'd like to check out the installation process, you can view it here: http://sitepro12.sitepro.com/masterlibrary/11498/installsheet/CM_11498_INS.pdf If you're not comfortable doing the drilling, any shop should be able to do the install for you.
