Your standard automatic transmission is equipped with sensors to detect vehicle and engine speed and load to determine the proper shift point. The transmission control module serves as a switchboard for this information passing from the engine and electrical system to the transmission, and when the TCM receives a bad signal from a sensor or detects some other problem, the transmission relay shuts down. This causes the whole system to go into a default or limp mode, where it can become lodged in second gear.
