What Drives Michael

BY Alex g.

It could be said that AutoAnything New Product Analyst Michael B. was born with a wrench in his hands. His earliest memories fondly filled with his father rattling off the year, make and model of classic cars, Michael quickly became just as enamored with the speed and style of each unique vehicle that came across their path.

His true first love (at the age 4) was a red Camaro proudly owned by a favorite cashier at the local Trader Joe’s. Each Sunday for the next six years, Michael and his father would fall a little deeper in love until the cruel day when the car was there no more – that is until the next year. When the Camaro, and her cashier owner returned, Michael (now age 10) wasted no time getting her phone number and making promises that one day he would proudly own this masterful piece of machinery. Just three weeks later, Michael’s father asked him to help repair their garage door opener and to his complete surprise – there it sat – the completely original 1967 Chevrolet Camaro RS/SS, just as it does today.

Left: Michael's reaction to his Father’s surprise purchase of his new 1967 Camaro in 2002.  Right: Michael’s 1967 Chevrolet Camaro RS/SS as it appears today, 2017.

The Camaro simply jump-started his passion for all things automotive, with his list of project cars including but not limited to, 1963 and 1967 Lincoln Continentals (with the suicide doors), a 1965 Mustang, a 1975 Chevy Luv Truck (with a small block V8 in it), a 1985 BMW 3 Series coupe and a 1995 Mustang GT.

"Nothing beats the whine of the GTO's supercharger and roar of the Corsa exhaust."
- Michael B.

Michael’s need for speed went beyond the track-worthy ’95 Mustang GT and straight for a 2006 Pontiac GTO with a 6-speed manual transmission. Starting with a full exhaust overhaul, then a rebuilt transmission and upgraded the suspension and finished with a supercharger with over driven pulleys and methanol injection), the GTO became the beast of his dreams. Thankfully for Michael’s gas budget, the GTO isn’t his daily driver.

Even though he’s the also the owner of a custom-ordered 2014 Infiniti Q60s with a 6-speed manual transmission, he spends most of his time behind the wheel of his Jeep –since his beloved black lab and Rhodesian ridgeback can come along for the ride. If you’re looking for Michael after hours, you’ll find him in the process of restoring his latest barn find, a one owner 1967 Volvo that had been sitting for over 20 years. Soon, the for sale sign will go up and he’ll be on the hunt for his next labor of love.
