1997 Ford F 150 Exhaust, Mufflers & Tips

There are few things in the car realm more annoying than a bad exhaust. Leaky exhaust systems can hurt performance, fuel economy, throw check engine codes and prevent your car from passing smog. A high-quality performance exhaust can be one of the most rewarding mods you can do to your vehicle. Every time you accelerate, shift or rev the engine you get a visceral impact from the sound and feel of your exhaust cracking and burbling.

A good exhaust setup can also be one of the best style upgrades for your car, whether it’s a side, single or dual exit, a chrome or titanium exhaust tip can make your car stand out. An exhaust system is a relatively expensive mod, that’s why it’s important to do research to find the best exhaust system brands and types to fit your vehicle and your customization goals.

Aftermarket manufacturers spend thousands of hours of prototyping and testing their custom exhaust systems to ensure every piece - from the headers to the muffler – performs to their specifications. Want to know how exhaust systems work or compare a slew of performance exhausts? Check out our exhaust buyers guide for an in-depth comparison.

"easy install took my son and myself about 2 hours. a 4" grinder with cutoff wheel made cuts an easy. sounds great , not too loud." —Patrick S from Negaunee, MI bought a Heartthrob Deep Tone Cat-Back Dual Exhaust Kit for a 1997 Ford F-150.

"'97 F150 4.6L w/Silver Ceramic SS. Ceramic gorgeous but scuffed from shipping, otherwise excellent fit and finish expected from JBA. JBA gaskets garbage. Sound MAYBE, just MAYBE slightly deeper than stock manifolds running through Flowmaster SI/DO 40 Series 3.5" in, 2.5"s out." —Bryan T from Eldridge, IA bought a JBA Cat4ward Headers for a 1997 Ford F-150, 4.6L V8.

"I bought the pair without the hi temperature paint so i sandblasted the old paint off and baked on some hi temp paint from advanced auto with my torches other than that it comes with all needed parts but i bought different gaskets. Much better than stock manifolds!" —Joe K from Brookfield, WI bought a PaceSetter Shorty Headers for a 1997 Ford F-150, 4.6L V8.

"Great fit and look. Take your time and follow the instructions and they go on great. Be prepared to spend 8 to 15 hours depending on how the old studs come out. But the fit and function is rewarding." —Eric S from Haven, KS bought a JBA Cat4ward Headers for a 1997 Ford F-150.

"Removing the old manifolds was the most difficult of the project. One stud on the passenger side was very stubborn and had to be heated and cooled. I would recommend gently cleaning the threads with a tap before installing the headers. There was only one bolt difficult to install and that was the rear driver's side. The hole was not as clean as it could have been and finger starting was difficult to say the least. I have driven less than 100 miles so I cannot really tell if there is any fuel economy improvement. There seems to be a little power increase but that maybe only psychological. They are much quieter than the leaky OEM manifolds, and with the MagnaFlow exhaust system the truck sounds authoritative." —Daniel K from Vermilion, OH bought a JBA Cat4ward Headers for a 1997 Ford F-150, 5.4L V8.

"could have been alot better gaskets for the install had to buy better ones from car dealer. They where metal ones two for each side.Overall the product sounds grat on my truck, they where less exspensive then buying new manifolds foi my truck ." —Mark F from Lancaster , PA bought a PaceSetter Shorty Headers for a 1997 Ford F-150, 4.6L V8.

"I like the system. Needs longer piece from Cat, but it's ok. One thing I don't like are the very visable tailpiece clamps(you'll have to Mig SS or Tig Al to remedy). Noticable good HP gain! Low rumble is what I want on this SS single side exhaust: if you want loud Gibson has one for you. The price and quality of this system is excellent! I'm impressed and will probably try their headers next." —Scott A from Elk City, OK bought a Gibson Exhaust Systems for a 1997 Ford F-150, SuperCab, 5.4L V8.

"I recently had a gibson exhaust system installed on my 1997 ford f-150. The exhaust has the dual chrome tips coming straight out the back below the bumper. Looks great! Sounds good, not to loud, and kind of mellow, no droning. No rattles, squeaks or leaks. I would recommend this system again." —Rob O from Floyds Knobs, IN bought a Gibson Exhaust Systems for a 1997 Ford F-150, SuperCab, 4.6L V8.

"I think it took me longer to remove the old exhaust than it did to install the new. Easy installation, prompt delivery, nice tone, and good looks made this system worth every penny." —Troy A from Garber, OK bought a Magnaflow Exhaust Systems for a 1997 Ford F-150, Supercab, 6' 6" short bed, 5.4L V8.

Excellent performance muffler without the loudness. Love magnaflow's low, but aggressive tone. Have had magnaflow mufflers on other trucks and they never disappoint. They provide a great sound and noticeably improved performance. View more reviews...
