I really like the look of this rack, and the instructions seem great except for one major flaw: They specify exactly how tightly to tighten the tensioning bolts (88-97 pound force inches), but the tool they provide isn't a torque wrench. It says in bold all-cap letters not to over tighten, but without a torque wrench it's impossible to know. I took a best guess and the rack seemed extremely solid. And a few days later I noticed on of the clamps had come completely off and if I had driven anywhere the rack would have fallen off the car. Was it so tight that it forced it's way off or so loose that it worked it's way off? I have no idea.
So I had to go to the hardware store and buy a torque wrench. But the tool they provide is a security allen wrench that can't fit onto the torque wrench. So I had a choice: Take a hacksaw to the tool they provide and adapt it to the torque wrench, or go buy a set of security bits. I chose the latter, and now the rack is securely and nicely on my car again.
So, in addition to the price of the rack I had to buy a $35 torque wrench and a $15 set of security bits. It was an unexpected cost.
If you already have a torque wrench, there's nothing to not love about this rack. If you don't, just be aware that it will be an important tool purchase. View more reviews...
