Surco Safari Roof Rack - Excellent

Recently purchased the Surco Safari Roof Rack for my 84 Jeep Cherokee. Assembly and mounting were a snap. Materials and construction are very good quality. I am very pleased with the rack and would recommend it to anyone.

so far so good

We used it on our ford escape. It seems tough. Installation wasn't too difficult.

Nicely made product; vendor needs better quality control.

The product is sharp looking on my vehicle and well built. With this said I had the following problems/issues. First, the entire rack is a nicely painted black, however all of the screws and bolts are a shiny, unpainted metal color. Second, the mounting brackets (J200) for my S5072 rack have a trapezoid shaped metal piece with a threaded hole in the middle for mounting. This metal piece inserts into the factory rack track on your vehicle and turns sideways to hold your rack on the vehicle. In one kit alone 2 of the 8 trapezoid pieces were not threaded, meaning I had to take them to a machine shop and have them threaded, or send the kit back for a replacement. Third, The rack itself is screwed together with self-tapping shiny, unpainted sheet metal screws; two out of the eight screws needed for proper assembly did not come with the rack. I had to go to a local hardware store and buy two screws that were close to what they provided with the rack. To conclude, the product is sharp looking and is well made, however the company seems to fall short on quality control. I contacted them twice, once by phone leaving a message and once by email, which was never returned. I offer this as constructive criticism, only, as they have a great product if they can work out the kinks.

Great service

Ive only had the rack on for a short time so haven't really put it to the test, but it was easy to install and seems good and sturdy. I live in Alaska so sometimes delivery is a problem here. Auto Anything got it here on time and at a reasonable cost.

awesome

I have had my rack on my 96 Jeep Cherokee for a while and absolutly love it. It was very easy to put together and the install is simple. I do recomend having a second pair of hands to get it up on the roof. I keep my toll box with my recovery gear and my spare tire up on it. I would highly recomend it to my friends.

Surco rating

First of all the rack looks good. Whether it is functional or not is to be determined. Secondly, the instructions on assembly are terrible. The installation to auto part is also terrible. I called you for assistance and was told immediately to call surco. It took them 7 hours to call me back. Poor customer service

Design and instructions could be better

The rack arrived when expected and was in perfect shape. The assembly instructions are poor at best, and the short strips for protecting the existing roof rails did not fit the cross rails correctly, unless I was trying to put them on wrong (instructions issue?), so I did not use them. I could not tighten the clamps enough to get the rack to really "grip" the existing roof rails to my liking without bending them. I had to use stacks of washers between the clamps and the bottom of the cross rails to keep them from bending. I've only had the rack on the vehicle for one week, but so far so good.

Instillation

I bought this to put on my 2002 silverado. This thing looks very cool, only complaints the directions could be a little better and you need some screws that are not included with it. I checked at lows and they don't even cary them. I am going to have to go to a little out of the way store just to get these screws.. but other than that it is really cool.

Overall good

I placed an order for this item because it looks good on the web and thought it will be great to increase the cargo capacity of my 2004 CR-V. It turned out I liked it very much. For installation, I probably spent about 1 h total. As it is said in other review, one of the side bars doesn't fit in the original position for my car and you need to move it all the way to the front (or move the other one to the back). The bolts are pretty tight and impossible to do it by hand. You need power drill to screw them tight enough for enough safety. I wish if there are nice cover for the brackets to look nicer but you may be able to cut original plastic covers so that they will fit in the groove.

safari rack

It worked well for us last week on our trip to SC. We were able to bring back a lot of goods since our luggage was stored on the roof.

Surco Safari Roof Rack on Hummer H3

This rack is great. You don't even have to have crossbars. You do need to have roof rail channels though. Assembly is easy but you might have to buy some slightly longer bolts to attach to your roof rails. I bought some at Home Depot for about $3. I used my rack in San Antonio's Fiesta Parade. Full of Speakers and lights.

Looks great but they need to get with the program

Half the reviews I read were complaning that the bolts were to short on the mounting kit. Well they were right, you would think that Surco would get their crap together and send the right bolts. Then when installing the light mounts I snapped two bolts. Autoanything shipped it quick and got a great deal, no complains on their part.

Fit like a glove!

I assembled the rack in less than 30 minutes, and installed it on top of my 2000 jeep xj in less than 15 minutes! Looks great, used it the first day i had it. Actually covers 3/4 of the roof on a xj and fits very well with the brackets that bolt right to the factory roof rack rails. I heard people having to drill and "customize" their rack to fit? NO fit perfect they probably didnt put it together right haha awesome rack for the money!

Rack Instillation

The rack arrived without the metal screws. I had to go buy them based on the list of what should have been included. The directions were skeletal at best, leaving out important steps. While I like the rack, the instructions/instillation were terrible
